| Mission |
Half the Sky (HTS) was created in order to enrich the lives and enhance the prospects for orphaned children in China. We create and operate infant nurture and preschool programs, provide personalized learning for older children and establish loving permanent foster care and guidance for children with disabilities. It is our goal to ensure that every orphaned child has a caring adult in her life and a chance at a bright future. |

Provision of nurture, education, enrichment, permanent foster care and medical treatments for orphaned children in China. |
| Recent Achievements |
In 11 years HTS has reached 15,000 children in 45 welfare institutions in 21 provinces and municipalities across China. In 2008 HTS became an officially recognized foreign NGO in China (one of only 3 NGOs with such status) and entered into an historic partnership with the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) to expand its work to 300 new “Blue Sky” welfare institutions, potentially reaching 100,000 orphaned children across China. Following the Sichuan Earthquake in May, 2008, HTS has also partnered with the MCA to establish 10 Children's Recovery centres for traumatized children living in refugee camps near the epicenter of the earthquake.
|
| Pioneer Projects |
HTS operates 5 core programs for orphaned children living within state-run welfare institutions in China: 1. Baby Sisters Infant Nurture Programs; 2. Little Sisters Preschools; 3. Big Sisters individualized learning and mentoring programs; 4. Family Village projects - permanent family-based foster care for children with special needs who will never be adopted; and 5. The China Care Home for medically fragile infants |
| Future Development |
Under its partnership with the MCA, HTS will establish a model HTS centre in all 31 provinces and municipalities of China in the coming 3 – 5 years; from that base it will provide training and mentoring for at least 300 Blue Sky welfare institutions (if not beyond) in HTS methods of nurturing care and education for orphaned children.
In 2009 Half the Sky, opened the China Care Home in Beijing where specially-trained care staff provides professional, round-the-clock nurturing care and medical supervision as well as in-hospital care for medically fragile children fighting for their lives.
HTS is also working with the Henan province Bureau of Social Welfare to address the speical needs of children orphaned by AIDS and in Sichuan with the Ministry of Civil Affairs to provide long-term emotional support for children traumatized by the 2008 earthquake.
