| Mission |
The Children's Heart Foundation (CHF) is a registered charity devoted to supporting children suffering from congenital and other heart diseases in Hong Kong. It was founded in 1994 by a group of concerned parents with children suffering from congenital heart disease. We work closely with the Cardiac Pediatric Unit at Grantham Hospital, which is the only tertiary referral centre for children and adolescents suffering from heart disease in Hong Kong, The Foundation provides an extensive range of both in-hospital and outpatient programmes and services for these special children and their families. Our office is in the hospital grounds.
Our Objectives:
1. To raise public awareness about heart disease and heart health in children;
2. To provide financial and psychological support to families with children suffering from heart disease;
3. To advocate the development of technology and methods to prevent, detect and treat heart disease in children.

b. In 2006, the Foundation spent about HK$3,300,000 on medical sponsorship for the treatment of 200 children with congenital heart disease.
c. In 2006, over 1,100 parents used the House of the Heart which provides a temporary accommodation for parents of hospitalised children.
d. Over 200 children participated in the CHF's educational and training programmes last year.
e. Raised public awareness of heart disease and heart health in children by public exhibitions which attracted 4,000 visitors in 2006.
f. Promoted heart health through the annual charity walk which attracted 3,000 participants in both 2006 and 2007. |
| Pioneer Projects |
a. Sponsorship for using Homografts for cardiac surgery in children. Homografts are cadaveric pulmonary or aortic valves. They help achieve a more effective surgical repair of complicated heart defects. This project was first introduced by in 1999 when the CHF launched the first medical exchange programme. Since then, 10-15 children benefit from this treatment every year.
b. Medical Exchange and Development Project: The CHF invites world renowned medical experts to Hong Kong to operate on children with complex heart conditions. This not only benefits the patients and their families directly, but also upgrades the skills of the doctors and surgeons in Hong Kong. The CHF also promotes and sponsors HK medical professionals for their training in HK and overseas to improve their skills and experience.
c. Comprehensive support project for the children: Children with heart disease face not only physical pain and stress, but also psychological developmental problems. The Foundation provides and organises comprehensive training and educational programmes for these children and their families.
|
| Future Development |
a. The Foundation seeks to sponsor more regular medical and exchange programmes in the coming years to help train the next generation of paediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons.
b. After 13 years of developing and working on its core functions of assisting children and their parents, subsiding non-standard treatment, providing special surgical services, providing accommodation to parents in the House of the Heart and supporting the children and their families through various activities, we will look for opportunities to expand our service and new initiatives that will bring about greater benefits to children with heart disease and their families in Hong Kong.
c. We will expand our network and look for opportunities to collaborate with other organisations in Hong Kong and overseas.
